  • Secondary DC / DNS server

If you use the server 2003 role wizard to create an additional DC will that automatically configure a secondary DNS server that has the same settings as the primary?

If not can anyone provide the steps necessary to create a backup DNS server for the domain?

    Many thanks in advance.

Re: Secondary DC / DNS server

If you have AD (Active Directory) integrated domain or domains, additional dns servers should be also domain controllers. (AD integrated domains are only available for DC's).
No matter witch method you choose to install an additional DC (server role wizard or run dcpromo) you have to install DNS.
Even if zone related settings have been configured on the frirst DC, DNS server specific settings like forwarders and advanced options are not inherited and need to be configured accordingly.

Re: Secondary DC / DNS server

If your DC is also your DHCP server you may also want to look at ensuring your DHCP service is redundant:

Re: Secondary DC / DNS server

Thanks for the replys. I don't believe their DNS is AD integrated. After running the role wizard for Domain Controller / Additional DC, DNS was not automatically installed. AD seems to be replicating.

Is DNS necessary at this point, or can it be added if the main DNS / DC fails?

If it is necessary, how can it be setup as a backup DNS, The DNS is for internal only and is forwarding their outside requests.

        Many thanks in advance.
