  • Cant see all clients on WSUS console

    Hi all,

I have installed WSUS server on Win2K3, it is getting updates through microsoft directly. All clients are using Win XP SP2. I have applied group
policy on perticular OU in such a manner that clients are pointed to the WSUS & updates are downloaded and installed automatically at
scheduled time. The problem is, on which OU I have applied policy only approx. 30% computers are pointing to WSUS, they are also getting
updated, I have "Enforced the policy" so it is not blocked by any other policy, comp. rejoined to domain, object reset through DC,
I tried this on different OUs also, Pls. suggest the solution.

How long have you left it?

I think by default WSUS clients contact the server every 12 hours (with an offset). I would leave it untill tomorrow and then take a look.

failing that, try restarting all the workstations.

    Hope this helps

      Hi,

      Thanx for reply,

I have installed WSUS 3 weeks ago, so the workstations & server are restarted
many times. but whenever I apply the policy on any OU the same thing happens. I checked with rsop.msc from client side, the policy is applied properly, but the problem is, I can't manage all the clients.

Sounds like a problems with automatic updates is having issues. Try this, on a test workstation / server:

        do this,

run regsvr32 /u wuaueng.dll from a command promt (This will remove all Automatic update component)
delete c:\windows\softwaredistribution folder and C:\windows\windowupdate.log (cleans out download files and start you a fresh log)
run regsvr32 wuaueng.dll from a command promot (This installs the automatic updates service)
run net start wuauserv (This starts the service)
run wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detection (This tells it to check in to the server now)

Wait a few and see if things start queing up for you to install

Have you used Ghost or something else to image the clients or are they all clean installs?

Re: Cant see all clients on WSUS console

              Hi,
This may be an extremly stupid question, but nevertheless:

-Are you sure that all of your clients can properly resolve name you specified in group policy? You may want to try to enter just IP address of your WSUS server in the policy (i.e. http://172.30.0.5) if that is the only website you have running on the machine where WSUS server is. Also, you may check the WindowsUpdate.log file (located in Windows folder on every WS) since client logs whatever it does there, and there may be some clues about what's wrong.

Also, you may find an useful little tool for checking your clients here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...s/default.mspx

I had similar problem and solved it using script m80arm posted above.

              Regards,
              Koyot

Re: Cant see all clients on WSUS console

I tried the solution given by m80arm, but no difference. as I told earlier that systems are getting updated but not shown in WSUS console. In the group policy I have given IP address not server name so there in no issue with resolving the name.

as told by Koyot i checked with running WSUS client diagnostic tool it has shown following results.

                WSUS Client Diagnostics Tool

                Checking Connection to WSUS/SUS Server
WUServer = http://(WSUS server Ip address)

The above status is from the system which is not shown on WSUS but got updates from WSUS.

I tried by using attached registry file but same thing.
