  • win2003 forwarder and internet access

To explain my problem i have to say a few word.
I am following the video tutorial from trainsignal.com
on the video it showed how to setup a DNS server and use forwarder option to access internet.

Normaly, when i am using XP, and not in the Learning environment, to access internet i use the following ip adress.

    IP: 10.1.1.37
    Subment Musk: 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway: 10.1.1.1( as this is my routers default address)

DNS: xxx.xx.xxx.xx(this is my isp's dns sever address)

Now, according to the trainsignal.com tutorial video, i have setup a lab of 3 computers.
Computer NO: One (This computer will run the Active directory and Domain controller)
    Computer name: Server1
OS: windows server 2003 enterprise edition
    IP address:192.168.1.201
    Subnet Musk: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254

    DNS:192.168.1.201

Computer NO: Two (This computer will run as Domain Controller)
    Computer name: Server11
OS: windows server 2003 enterprise edition
    IP address:192.168.1.211
    Subnet Musk: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254

    DNS:192.168.1.201

Computer NO: Three (This computer will run as just a client)
    Computer name: clientPC
OS: windows server 2003 standard edition
    IP address:192.168.1.1
    Subnet Musk: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254

    DNS:192.168.1.201

Now, i have changed all the ip addresses and DNS server address according to the tutorial, i cant access internet anymore. So, on the next part of that tutorial video showed, how to set up a "forwarder" on the "Server1" computer and add the DNS address of ISP on there, so that the "clientPC" can access the internet.

But it doesnt work for me.

I have done exactly the same things that was shown in the video to setup the Forwarder option, but still cant access internet from any of the pc. On the forwarder option i have put in my ISP's dns address and also i tried by putting my routers ip address(which is 10.1.1.1), but it still doesn't work. I cant access internet.

    Please help some one....
If any one has difficulties understanding the problem, please ask me questions.
I really need to solve this.

Re: win2003 forwarder and internet access

    Hi De_JA_Vu.

The problem is that your gateway (the router) is now on a different subnet than the rest of the computers.

    You have two options:
1 - change the LAN IP configuration on the router to:
    Address: 192.168.1.254
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

2 - substitute the example's IP addresses with ones that are in the router's subnet.
    i.e.
Computer NO: One (This computer will run the Active directory and Domain controller)
    Computer name: Server1
OS: windows server 2003 enterprise edition
    IP address:10.1.1.37
    Subnet Musk: 255.0.0.0
    Default Gateway: 10.1.1.1

    DNS:10.1.1.37

Computer NO: Two (This computer will run as Domain Controller)
    Computer name: Server11
OS: windows server 2003 enterprise edition
    IP address:10.1.1.38
    Subnet Musk: 255.0.0.0
    Default Gateway: 10.1.1.1

    DNS:10.1.1.37

Computer NO: Three (This computer will run as just a client)
    Computer name: clientPC
OS: windows server 2003 standard edition
    IP address:10.1.1.39
    Subnet Musk: 255.0.0.0
    Default Gateway: 10.1.1.1

    DNS:10.1.1.37

Re: win2003 forwarder and internet access

      Thanx a lot jeremy.
I will try it tonight and will post how did it go.
Just a quick question, if i go for the option one you have mentioned.
Will it be too much hassle?
I have found that, on my router there is a option called LAN, where i can change the Lan ip from 10.1.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 and the subnet from 255.0.0.0 to 255.255.250.0. If i change it in here, will it just work fine?
or do i have to change it somewhere else as well?

Without knowing the exact model and type of connection I can't give a "definitely" but in all likelihood and probability everything should work fine if you make that change.

Re: win2003 forwarder and internet access

Your internal network settings should not affect your internet access for any of your machines as long as they are all configured within the same IP subnet.

Messing about with your external settings however will not make you a very popular chap with your ISP's.

Re: win2003 forwarder and internet access

              mates,
Last night i have changed my routers ip address from 10.1.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 and i pretty much messed up the whole thing. My internet connection was fine. but when ever i tried to go into my modems Virtual Server(Port forwarding) or Filter option, my router would freeze. each time i tried to reach those option it froze and i had to restart my router by unplugging the power cable.
I had to master reset my router to get it back on the default settings.
Now i have decided not to change the ip addresses of my router any more, rather i would change my computers ip address. That is working fine.

But the problem is, even i have done the master reset of my router and got it back to the default ip address of 10.1.1.1 and subnet musk of 255.0.0.0, I still cant access the Virtual server and Filter option of my Dlink DSL G 604T router.
              What went wrong?

I sure that changing the LAN IP address and subnet mask didn't cause this issue. That has got to be an issue with the DLink hardware or firmware. I checked DLink's site and there aren't any firmware updates. Is the box still under warranty? I'd call up DLink. Maybe they have a fix or will replace the router.

                  Thanx Jeremy.
                  I have solved the problem.
I did another master reset and then instead of loading the pre saved configuration, i configured the router from the scratch.
It seems to be running perfectly alright.
Thank you specially for replying to my questions so promptly.
