  • Server name but, Unknown server name?!

    hey there,

I have two server 2003 SP1s running together. one (192.168.0.90) as the parent domain and the other (192.168.0.95) as the child domain. up until recently I have had issues with my DNS server in the parent domain, it does not want to reslove ips to names and vice versa. but now my child domain wont ping to the parent. when I go to the command prompt to netstat I get an "unknown server" message, but the tripy thing is that active directory is running and working. I havent had any errors in active directory so I do not know were to start looking to find and resolve the issue. I need any type of help with this problem.

    thanks,

active directory and dns are strong friends if your dns is broken i think ad will not work well check your dns forward and reverse zones and event logs and the second server is using the first to query dns? or does it have its own copy?

at the point pinging the first server did you try with ip or with name?

thanks, but everything seems fine. nothing out of the ordinary.

It would ping with ip but not with name.

Check your DNS and make sure it has an A Record with an IP for the workstation.
        1 1 was a racehorse.
        2 2 was 1 2.
        1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
        2 2 1 1 2

check your tcp/ip settings... dns part... go to command line and use nslookup it will help you

and you have to check your DNS server if your settings on server2 are ok there is some problem on server one with the DNS like Biggles say A records and PTR records should be there...

i think you can use commands like

          (on server 2)
          ipconfig /registerdns

and also check your hosts file on server 2 maybe there is an entry that points to false ip...
