  • DNS still resolves after I deleted roothints and forwaders

    This is the situation:

I installed domain controller Contoso.com and integrated DNS into AD, all is working fine. The server and clients are resolving all local and Internet names. Domain controller has only itself as a preferred DNS server in TCP/IP settings.

I was wondering what would have happened if I deleted all roothints and forwarders? Would resolving work? I've done it and resolving was still working!!!! Now I wonder why...? how? I tried stopping DNS Server service and then it didn't resolve Internet names any more. Also, I tried to do the same creating a forward lookup zone named "." and it also blocked all resolving. But why was resolving working fine even after I deleted all root hints and forwarders?

Thanks for your suggestions and answers, folks (in advance)!

Well, there can be few reasons such as:

    1. You use ADSL etc. router that can be use as DNS proxy.

    2. The server used cache settings etc.

    3. You didnít stopped, delete the root hints and then started the DNS
    service.

    4. There server was setup with a secondary DNS in the TCP/IP configurations.

How exactly did you delete the roothints?
It maybe that you still had entries in the cache. Try ipconfig /flushdns
