  • Over 400,000 small files in folder, now I can't get into this folder

This is a windows 2000 server machine and is running several active HR databases.

One folder contains over 400,000 small files of type *.log *.bat and perhaps some other files.

The dba's have lost the ability to get into this folder to clean it out/remove old db log/tmp files.

When I try to use My Computer or Windows Explorer to just click once on the full folder, it appears to stop responding. If I let it just sit and work on it, it will eventually highlight the folder and after a while I can right click the folder object and select properties. When I selected the explore menu item, it took about 30 minutes for another explorer window to open up but only the outline; even after 3 hours it still had not displayed anything.

Does anyone know of a way to troubleshoot this issue? I searched thru google but did not find one result with any help or ideas of how to proceed.

    Thanks for any ideas.

Did you tried another file manager(totalcmd for ex.)?(and set it not to load complete directory tree?).or did you try command line?

      Have you tried Command prompt?

Just go to that folder and delete unneeded files in prompt...

Are you getting any Journal Wrap errors in event viewer?
Also like Hassu says, command line is definitely the way to go.

I read it somewhere months back... (i forgotten where.. )
windows do not really support so many files in a folder...
usually u will encounter hv problem when ur files hit 50k and above...
best way is to restructure ur files storage if you are able to access it again...

Command prompt - as suggested, Using non-windows OS to access it as ext. hdd.

If you are familiar with other OS like linux, I suggest you to use System Rescue CD http://http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page which I found a very useful bootable CD which can be handy in many situation like this. Boot through this cd and mount the HDD, access the partition and you should be able to delete or archive those files. It also got ntfs read/write support too. But please be careful if you are not sure how to go about with this method, you may screw up things so read the documents well bfore you start working on it. http://http://www.sysresccd.org/Sysr...-Write_support
            Good luck
