  • Just started getting network slow down

    Hi all

We are experiencing a bit of network slow down at the moment. Every so often opening files and folders stored on the network (mapped drives) can have a delay of around 20 seconds.

It has only started happening this week. I have tried turning off remote file scanning in my Sophos anti virus but im still getting it.

The files that are being opened are from various servers. There hasn't been any major changes to DNS, AD etc...

I am going to try turning off sophos all together to see if that helps.

Any ideas of where to go from here?

    Thanks in advance

    Just a few thoughts;

    already started a network monitor?
Any virusses out there on the network?
    Broken switch/cables?
    anything in the Eventviewers?

Started performance monitor on our main file server.

Im not aware of any viruses. Sophos is set to e-mail when it finds anything on all workstations and servers

Not too sure about broken switches / cables. We did install 3 new switches about 3 weeks ago.

There is nothing of interest or out of the ordinary in the event logs of servers/workstations

The only thing that sticks out is that our main file server is a new Windows Server 2003 R2 server which is running file server resource manager. We have quotas in place and file type exclusions. Could this be slowing things down?

Re: Just started getting network slow down

My only experiance of slowdown was caused by another organisation that allows us access having a router/firewall problem .. so things got bounced around.
This may not apply to your network.

The second was a share from an old sever that I had not deleted, this caused me the greatest headache. This affected our W2K PC's as they normally cache the browse if there is a lost share they, cant so the time needed to do this does not change..

Just a couple of thoughts Tony
        Hope they are of use

Re: Just started getting network slow down

          Thanks for the comments Andy.

We dont think it is Sophos causing it. Could it be a Windows Update that has caused it? The servers are not being streesed at all but the error is easy to replicate.

I think we may need to use our technet support call for this i think.

          Any other ideas?

Network monitor? Can you give me an example of one?

Replicate by going to a workstation and opening a particular shortcut to a share on a student workstation. Very odd!!

it could well be. They are managed. They are Cisco 2950 (with enhanced image) 48 port. We have two of them. They are in our new block.

But im a cisco noob so you would have to point me in the right direction. What should i be looking for?

Re: Just started getting network slow down

Funnily enough we have the 24pt versions of these.

Now i'm no Cisco guru, infact probably more of a noob than you, but we had problems with slow downs and it seemed to clear up when we disabled STP (Spanning Tree Protocol).

                              From the masters themselves

                              http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/...an2/stpapp.htm

It may be way off what you are looking for but it may help.
