  • how to switch from workgroup to domain?

I am using IBM server runing windows 2003 server
one part of my network is in domain, other one is in workgroup.

when i wanted to switch all computers to domain i get this message all the time...

Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\WINDOWS\debug\dcdiag.txt.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain boreas.local:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
    (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.boreas.local

Common causes of this error include the following:

    - The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

    - One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:

    boreas.local
    local
    . (the root zone)

    any advice is welcome..

    Hi Marious.

The DNS server for the computer you're joining to the domain needs to be the DNS server that hosts, in your case, the boreas.local zone. This is often a domain controller.
If it is set up as described above then try and ping the DNS server. If it fails then you've found your problem.

Is there a firewall anywhere between the computers?
Check to see if the record exists in the zone.
Run dcdiag on the DC and note any errors.

Yes, I have windows firewall. But, other computers works just fine. The bad news is that, I can turn off win firewall...got no permissions in windows, although I am Administrator, what went wrong I don't know.

Since there's a firewall could you draw a diagram of your network?
Did you check on the DNS entry? Did you run dcdiag?

              Hi Marious

Not sure if this is JUST because your changing from workgroup to domain but try this. It appears to be a DNS fault as JeramyW suggests

run netdiag /fix command on the domain controller will confirm that
all SRV records that are in the Netlogon.dns file are registered on the
              primary DNS server.
