  • Can't Send external email... SBS & Exc 2003

    Hi,

I have searched the forum on this issue i have, and found some article relating to but not fully addressed my problem, so my appologies if anybody has seen this in another topic...

I'm tring to send external email but having trouble...

We are getting internal send/rec email ok, rec external email ok, but cannot send to the outside world... it's driving me nuts...!

Various techies have told me to re-install the whole thing but this is not an option, also in the next few weeks we are changing our DSL provider and until I fix this this, that won't happen, that suggests i have to re-install again if I change the external SMTP connector...!

    Can anyone help.

    thanks...

Have you tried running the internet connection wizard again?

How are you sending? Directly (use DNS to resolve target IPs) or via a smarthost at your ISP

Does your ISP have any policy on blocking port 25? I know that, in the UK, one of the biggest (BT) used to block port 25 unless you buy a business class connection.

Thanks for the prompt reply Ossian...

I have run the ICW but didn't fix it.

I have setup a smart host useing Clara.net smtp server, (My DSL providor)
They don't block port 25, but they will only allow outgoing mail via this server if you are a customer of theirs using their DSL connection, so that's ok.

I have romoved the SMTP connector in Connectors, and re-installed using ICW.
I have been told that if you don't get right first time your screwed and have to re-install SBS2003 & Exc all over again, but with no guarantee it will work. I can't believe this is the solution... (anyway this is not an option)

I have followed various article on MS site, all saying "following these" to sort it...!!!
      But it hasn't arrrggghhhhhh...!!!

      Background:

I have set up MX records on my the .co.uk
      - exc.domain.co.uk (priority 10)
      - mail.domain.co.uk (priority 20)

So the exchange server gets the mail first, but if offline the domain host picks it up until the server is back online.
      Receiving is ok.

I have setup the following a records also:
      - owa.domain.co.uk
      - vpn.domain.co.uk
      - exc.domain.co.uk
Not an issues at the moment but can't see server from outside but inside the network is okay

...and have setup NAT on the router to forward the following ports to the local SBS 2003 server:
      - https:\\ on port 443
      - http:\\ on port 25

As i said incomming is ok, it's outgoing that's foxed me...

      Any ideas...?

      Thanks again...

Does your firewall allow outgoing connections on port 25??

        How is your connector configured??

Do you connect to a smarthost to send mail??

          Thanks for replying Wullie,

My Firewall is part of my router... Draytek v2800... and yes outgoing mail is allowed... by default.

What do you need to know re ther config of the conector...?
I can send screen shots if this would help...

          The smart host is "relay.clara.net"

          Regards,

Have you tried to telnet to the smarthost and send mail from there using your email account.

I'm wondering if there is a problem at the smarthost end.

Do you need to login to the smarthost to send??

Another thing to check is the Message Tracking Centre, only if you have message tracking enabled. If it isn't enabled then enable it.

This should be able to tell you if it has been sent to the smarthost for delivery.

                Wullie,

I have sent a telnet email via relay.clara.net no problem,
And according to Clara net i don't need to log in...

But, I can't send Telnet email via mail.domain.co.uk (which is what it was before i changed the MX record)

Header from the telnet email recieved in my mail box, See atached.

Also i have attached screen shots of connector etc...

So you logged into claranet and sent a message from "[email protected]" to "[email protected]" and it worked ok.

I'm presuming that you will need to be able to send from [email protected] to the same??

I think i'm starting to figure this one out.

Your internal namespace will be adin.local, correct??

What is your external namespace?? pendlebusinesssolutions.co.uk??

What is the primary address you are sending from. Ideally this should be your pendlebusinesssolutions.co.uk address. This should be set in your recipient policies.
