  • DNS Issues with SBS 2003

Hi, first post (part one) -please be gentle!

I have a bit of a problem with AD and DNS, including, but not limited to the domain subfolders (_msdcs, _gc, dc, _TCP etc) in the forward lookup zones (i.e. they are not there). the lookup zones are AD integrated

whenever i do an nslookup I get:

    Default server: servername.domain.local
    Address: 10.0.0.3

    dcdiag gives:
    Domain Controller Diagnosis

    Performing initial setup:
    Done gathering initial info.

    Doing initial required tests

    Testing server: Default-First-Site-Name\Servername-SBS2003
    Starting test: Connectivity
    The host ffd89329-b77f-4104-814d-badc22d4cd9f._msdcs.domain.local
could not be resolved to an
IP address. Check the DNS server, DHCP, server name, etc
    Although the Guid DNS name
    (ffd89329-b77f-4104-814d-badc22d4cd9f._msdcs.Domain.local)
couldn't be resolved, the server name (servername-sbs2003.domain)
resolved to the IP address (10.0.0.3) and was pingable. Check that
the IP address is registered correctly with the DNS server.
    ......................... servername-SBS2003 failed test Connectivity

    Doing primary tests

    Testing server: Default-First-Site-Name\servername-SBS2003
Skipping all tests, because server servername-SBS2003 is
not responding to directory service requests

DNS Tests are running and not hung. Please wait a few minutes...

I have run through the microsoft article id 310568, including setting the zones to be primary and not AD integrated, and i think my keyboard is wearing out for the number of times I have done a net stop/start netlogon and ipconfig /flush dns and registerdns!

I have also completely removed and reinstalled DNS, with the same result. I even had to manually add the a record and associated ptr record so it could find itself!

as I understand it it is the netlogon service that creates the subdomain folders so why are they not being created?

sorry for the 'war and peace post' (it's a good one for a first post!) but please help!

sorry not sure what would be needed.

yes 1dc (sbs 2003 box) with 1 other member server (sql)

SBS holds all the main roles (DC, AD, DNS, etc)

              ok

check your NIC and see that IP address 10.0.0.3 ( i think ) you type it in the DNS section under the NIC config (dns address 10.0.0.3)

              after you check

              STOP the DNS
              START the DNS
              ipconfig /flushdns

              STOP NETLogon service
              Start Netlogon

              ipconfig /registerdns

              tell us

I notice a naming conflict one says servername.<domain>
and another says servername-sbs2003.<domain>. Which is it? and it MOST DEFINITELY SHOULD be AD integrated, AFAIK.
                TIA

                  Hi, thanks for the reply.

I assume you mean the DNS tab under advanced TCP settings on the nic, if done that, and still the same - even after 15 minute wait for the registerDNS error report (there are none)

Re: DNS Issues with SBS 2003

Bob (and I have an uncle of that name), please don't be put off by the "too much information comments". While it is sometimes hard to parse through the info it is better to supply too much than too little. You will see many of the posts asking for additional info, you did well!!

I think what Steven refers to about the naming conflict is there appears to be 3 names associated with this server.

                      lservername-sbs2003
                      servername-sbs2003
                      servername

DNS will be right confused not knowing what name is the correct one. If it is possible, it might be a good idea to reinstall the whole thing again but this time use a smaller name. If as I suspect the middle option I provided is the name, then it is 18 characters long. I believe this to be too long, but I am not an SBS specialist so this may not matter. (A shorter name also makes it easier to map a drive if you need to do it manually)
                      1 1 was a racehorse.
                      2 2 was 1 2.
                      1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
                      2 2 1 1 2

Re: DNS Issues with SBS 2003

                        thanks for your words biggles!

                        I appreciate it!

                        the issue is fixed!

basically I followed MS article 310568 (a server 2k article) then when that seemed not to work I tweaked it slightly to include the following:

1 change all zones to primary, unchecking the AD integration
                        2 delete all zones
3 in AD/Services/MicrosoftDNS delete all the root hints
                        4 uninstall DNS
                        5 Reboot
                        6 Reinstall DNS
7 recreate lookupzones not forgetting to add the .local at the end (stops single instance domain name)
                        8 net stop/ start netlogon
                        9 ipconfig /flushDNS & registerDNS
10 have a cigarette and a cup of coffee
11 cheers wildly as it all comes back to life, complete with subfolders and everything.
12 compose yourself after strange looks from management, check system with dcdiag/netdiag/nslookup
13 go to the pub with a big grin on your face!

note steps 10-13 are optional :P

thanks to one and all for your help and pointing out the things I had missed, though the "lservername-sbs2003" was more my poor editing skills than what was listed on the log

right, now all I have to do is clear a MSexchangeAL error, and I will be happy (though looking at it, the issue could resolve itseld now I have fixed DNS

                        Thanks again one and all!

Well done on your fix and thanks for posting back with your progress.
