  • Adding 2k3 r2 DC

We have a site running SBS2003 and have recently purchased windows server
2003 r2 std to install at a remote location for a small number of users,
The sites are connected by vpn tunnel and can see each other no problems
(the 2k3 server can join the sbs2003 domain no problem).
Trying to run dcpromo as an additional DC brings up the following error:

    "The operation failed because:

The active directory installation wizard cannot continue because the forest
is not prepared for installing windows server 2003. Use the adprep
command-line tool to prepare both the forest and the domain. For more
information about using the Adprep, see Active Directory Help.

The version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not
compatible with the version of Active Directory on this computer."

Now i may be wrong but isn't the adprep tool used for win2k servers?
I tried running the adprep tool anyway and get the message "forest-wide
    information has already been updated".
    Would really appreciate any help!!!

IIRC, Small Business Server will not allow other DCs in the domain, so I think you are doomed to failure on this one

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

      Thanks for the reply m8
Managed to sort it in the end by running adprep from the second 2k3 r2 CD.
Prepped the sbs2003 server and the 2k3 server joined fine.

Thanks -- I pulled that "factoid" from the dim, distant past and didnt bother to check it out properly.

          Mea Culpa!

            Re: Adding 2k3 r2 DC

Of course you can add this but make sure you use the "adprep" off the R2 disk not the standard W2K SP1 OR the SBS disks.

Just to reiterate you can have as MANY DC's in an SBS network as you wish - well actually only 75 as each one will consume a CAL.

              Re: Adding 2k3 r2 DC

And just to add my 2 cents worth, the Adprep for Windows 2003 Server R2 is on Disk 2 is in the CMPNENTS\R2\ADPREP folder. It is interesting to note that the file on Disk 2 is 4K larger and has an earlier date stamp to the Adprep.exe file in the i386 folder on Disk 1. The documentation I read refered to the Disk 2 adprep and made no mention of the file in the i386 folder on Disk 1.
              1 1 was a racehorse.
              2 2 was 1 2.
              1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
              2 2 1 1 2

                  Re: Adding 2k3 r2 DC

Microsoft have a trial version of R2 that is downloadable from their website (well it was when I first looked at it after it was released).
                  1 1 was a racehorse.
                  2 2 was 1 2.
                  1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
                  2 2 1 1 2

                    Re: Adding 2k3 r2 DC

Yes apparently there is an additional Scheme update (31) for R2 to be added to a Win2k domain. Thanks for the tip on using Disc 2 ADPREP tool. Silly Microsoft!
