    Roles

You canít transfer the roles usually Ė you will have to seize them.

Also, you will need to add the server as new domain controller in the exiting domain, setup DNS server on it, WINS etc.

Please note that this change arent support by Microsoft, and you should
    backup all the servers before.

You may need to add a new Exchange server on the new DC, move to it the public folder + mailboxes and then uninstall the SBS Exchange server.

Please note that this change arent support by Microsoft, and you should
    backup all the servers before.

Then run DCPROMO on the SBS server and move it as member server.
There times that you may need to remove it manually from the active directory:

Please note that this change arent support by Microsoft, and you should
    backup all the servers before.

    Good Luck,

Re: Transfering FSMO roles from SBS windows2k to Advanced server

I just went through this, but on 2003. There is a lot of information out there about SBS limitations and such, but very little about how to go from SBS to Windows 2003 Server Enterprise. With the transition pack, it looks to be straightforward to go to Windows 2003 Standard, but that's not what they wanted.

Anyway, I just moved a company from SBS 2003 to Windows 2003 Enterprise. Here's what I did:
      1) Installed 2003 Enterprise and added it to the domain.
      2) Installed Exchange to the same Organization and moved everything over. (Lookup the KB article on how to remove the first exchange server.)
      3) Installed AD-Integrarted DNS on the new server and setup zone transfers with SBS server.
      4) Made the new DC a GC server and transferred the FSMOs with ntdsutil. (GUI didn't look like it would let me do it.)
      5) Ran DCPROMO to demote the SBS server.
      6) From Add/Remove, went into SBS and uninstalled Exchange.

I wish this had been posted somewhere before I had to go through it. It was just like you would do it with a normal DC, but the documentation out there regarding the restrictions of SBS made it questionable that the process would work.

      I hope this helps someone.
