  • Virus has removed Windows and Exchange .exe files

    Hey guys,

Our SBS 2003 Standard server got a virus which has now been removed, but exchange services won't start as some of the .exe files no longer exist.

I've even found that certain Windows files such as sfc.exe don't exist either.

I've never run any kind of repair on an OS like this before so I'm not sure how to go about this.

We have tape backups but think this may be the last thing to try.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Why would restoring from backups be the last thing to try?

When performing a restore, you can usually select whether existing files should be overwritten or not. If you simply make sure to select that no files are to be overwritten and that only file data is to be restored (not System State or any databases), only the missing files will be restored from the backup.

(Well, any files and folders that were intentionally deleted since the backup was run will obviously also be restored, but it's usually no big deal to delete any such files again afterwards.)

Couldn't you use a shadow volume restore? Obviously only if its turned on.
