  • SBS2011 Issue with outlook since upgrade

    Hi everyone.

We recently upgraded our server and since then I have a couple of problems. I cannot work out if the problem could be with SBS2011 or not - can anyone offer advice?

Problem 1 - on a client machine, there are several pop/smtp accounts for other domains. Never was a problem on the old server (older version of SBS) now, specifically when there is an attachment, these emails will not send and sit on the outbox on the client machine. As soon as the attachment is removed they go - is there any setting that could cause this?

Problem 2 - it seems that the sever is somehow controlling the layout of outlook. As an example, by default we used to have preview only on unread messages. After the server upgrade it previews on all messages. This means for every folder we have created, we have to manually change it back - no big deal but I can find nowhere that seems to suggest the server would do this.

Thanks a lot for any input.

What about free disk space on the client machine and SBS Server?

Thanks for the response - no issue with disk space.

Is there any email sending size restriction?

Have you also upgraded outlook on the clients (or patched, service packed or made any other changes at the same time as you introduced SBS 2011)?

What type of Email server is it. Exchange or postfix? If it is exchange, can you try sending the mail throug OWA and plz check if same thing is happening.

Its a Small Business Server so presumably Exchange as the main one, but the OP mentions problems with additional POP Accounts

btw, which version of Outlook is it?

Thanks for all the assistance so far.

It is exchange however the issue is not with the exchange server account - mail sends fine here. It is with outlook on a client PC sending mail through a pop/smtp account.

The outlook version is 2003 and nothing has changed in the way of patches or updates on the client machine since the server change.

It is like tehre is something such as a firewall rule or some policy that is now stopping smtp sending from client computers. I have tried disabling the firewall, uninstallaing the antivirus (Sophos) but still mail with attachements (and only attachments) fail to send.

Re: SBS2011 Issue with outlook since upgrade

Presumably it is multiple email accounts under one outlook profile?
IIRC it still sends using Exchange, not direct to the ISP (may well be wrong here)

Does OWA send attachments without errors?
Have you checked for blocked attachment types in Exchange?

It is multiple accounts under one profile. Other than the exchange account, I understood the others to route directly out via ISP.

I have not used OWA and am unsure how to access this to test what you are asking.

I do not believe this is attachment specific. images, pdf, even signature gifs are prevented from being sent.

                        OWA is normally at https://remote.domain.com/owa
(put in your domain details after remote)

Would Microsoft have added anything to Exchange so it won't work with a now "Life Expired" Office/Outlook 2003? Not saying it would be deliberate but maybe something was added to the Exchange Update that resulted in a bug being born.

I have managed to access this and I have successfully sent an attachment. No problem.

OK, so it is outlook that's the issue, not Exchange
Can you send attachments between mailboxes in your domain?
Can you create a new profile (Exchange only) and test with that?

What Service Pack is on Outlook - it should be SP3: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/dat...e-2010-server/
