  • SBS2011 recovery

I recently was called to a client who's Dell PowerEdge T410 server had gone down with a motherboard fault. The storage is two drives mirrored on a PERC 6i card.
They only backup data so had no AD or Exchange.

As the motherboard was a couple of days away, it was decided to put one of the mirrored drives into a spare Dell 2950.

All looked good and the green bar appeared but after 20 seconds it rebooted and kept doing so at the same point.

Is there any software that can allow one half of a mirror to boot on dissimilar hardware?

They are now back up and running and we have setup a proper backup regime and imaging using StorageCraft Shadow protect.

no. it's not to do with the RAID controller, or only having half a mirror.

It's more to do with complete differences in the HAL between the 2950 and T410.
they are entirely different chipsets and even different generations.

I'm glad you got the backup sorted.

Could you capture the image with something like Acronis and select the 'restore to dissimilar hardware' option and restore to the other server?
      technically possible
