  • Migrating from server 2003 standard and exchange 2003 to sbs 2011

I am planning a migration from server 2003 standard with exchange 2003, to SBS 2011.

I was recently recommended this guide (By a Petri member) for sbs 2003 - sbs 2011:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../gg490796.aspx

But my scenario is now slightly different as I am not coming from an SBS environment.

Just wondering if I can still (roughly) follow the same guide, or if there is a better guide, and/or if anyone has completed a similar migration, and has any pointers?

Looks as if someone else has tried it, but not sure how successfully.

SBSMigration.com also appears to cover it, and is, IMHO, money well spent:

I wonder who pointed that out.

You should be able to use the guide and just omit the SBS 2003 specific steps. But it does require some knowledge to know weather it's actually just SBS or if it's using SBS tools to make it simpler and there's actually the regular way that needs to be performed.

But, I agree with Tom, the SBSMigration toolkit is well worth the money and will give you step-by-step instructions for your specific scenario.

Re: Migrating from server 2003 standard and exchange 2003 to sbs 2011

I think based on your comments I'm going to do it the manual way (seeing as it's only a 5 user network).

I have only ever done one online migration, and seeing as this will be not fully supported, I think its a bit risky.
I have a very smooth process for manual migration so I'll do that, and the next system I do that is a fully supported scenario (ie sbs -> sbs) I'll do the online migration.

Also regarding the swing migration kit, I have always wanted to try that, so perhaps will cost that in next time.

Thanks for the help again !
