  • Missing email from server

I have a problem with a windows 2003 sbs server that I'm hoping someone will be able to help.

    The problem is as follows:

Some email from external domains cannot reach my users. There is no AV/FW enabled on the server so we can rule that out. At times the sender will receive a NDR but not always.

The server was inherited by me so I can only provide information as to the setup. Besides the above the server has been working with no other issues.

Email flow is as follows: sender->SPAM Filtering by email address provider->server.

I can supply server IP and SPAM Filter IP to check ptr and mx records if requested.

    Thanks,
    Christos

      Re: Missing email from server

      according to mxtoolbox:

mx records for domain.com resolve to mail.domain.com with the IP of the spam filter.

ptr records of sbs IP resolve to mail.domain.com

a records of mail.domain.com resolve to IP of the spam filter.

      Will post NDR on Monday.

p.s. willalso confirm on Monday the above

            Re: Missing email from server

            it'll do.

It tells me that the server sending the email was unable to reach the primary MX record.

where you mention a spam filter - do you mean something like Mimecast, GFI mail filtering or similar?
Or is it a device within your network?

Third party. It is a service provided by the host of the website and email addresses.

                Re: Missing email from server

you need to get in touch with the adminstrators at the sending-domain and ask them to help you troubleshoot this.

should I ask them something specific?

                    Re: Missing email from server

to troubleshoot why their email isn't reaching your hosted anti-spam service.
they should be able to do things like MX lookups, DNS lookups, pings, traceroutes and raw telnet connections to the smtp service
