  • sbs backups are successful, but complete with errors

I have a problem on sbs 2008 with SBS scheduled backups.

I am backing up all production drives to a dedicated internal harddrive.

in the SBS console, the backups show as successful every night.

in windows server backup, the status of the backup is successful, but in the description of each backup, it says "completed with errors".

If I view details and go to the errors tab, I see the following:

    name: D:
    message: Incorrect function.

D is the main data drive.

Check to see that the Exchange log files are cleared each time. Otherwise your Exchange is not backing up correctly, and you may, eventually, run out of disk space.

Iím honoured to have been selected for the SMB 150 list for 2013. This is the third time in succession (no logo available for 2011) that I have been honoured with this award.

Re: sbs backups are successful, but complete with errors

I ran the checkdisk on the drive, and there is 1 error:
"The second NTFS boot sector is unwriteable"

When I look that error up, I find this post and mention of shriking the partition because of corrupt secotrs at the end of the drive:
          http://forum.acronis.com/forum/6228

When I was originally researching the windows backup error (incorrect function) there was also mention of shrinking the drive by a small amount (1GB).

Is this advisable? If I perform a shrink from within computer management, will it effect the data on the drive?

          thanks

If you were to shrink from within disk management, first of al run a defragmentation and make sure all your data is below the 1GB you're trying to shrink (Ie, if you have a 40GB drive, you should have no more than about 37GB on it to be safe.)

Also - have a full backup just in case. (I know, catch22 - get a free 30 day trial of an online service if you have to)

also, run chkdsk D: /f - this may fix the issue without shrinking (but you'll need to reboot the server probably)
