  • SBS 2011 and virtualisation

In Q1 of 2013 we need to install a new server with a client of ours.
I want some advice on what is the best way to do this.

They want a SBS and one extra server.
On the extra server will be a small third party program running.

We want to run the extra server virtual.

What is the best way to set this up and wich licenses do we need ?

    Re: SBS 2011 and virtualisation

Does the extra program require SQL? If so, you may need to order the licenses in Q4 2012. You should order SBS 2011 + Premium Add-On (PAO). this gives you a host server which runs Hyper-V (only). To that you install SBS 2011 to one virtual machine and another Windows Server 2008R2 with SQL for your application. The reason for Q4 is that PAO may not be readily available after the end of the year.
Otherwise, buy SBS 2011 and Server 2012 and set up the same way.
If you are thinking of moving your mail to cloud (O365 or hosted Exchange), consider buying just Server 2012 and enquiring about a downgrade to Server 2012 Essentials. If you still want to stay in-house (and there are still many advantages to that IMHO), you could buy Server 2012 + Exchange 2010/2013 and roll your own SBS.
    TIA

Iím honoured to have been selected for the SMB 150 list for 2013. This is the third time in succession (no logo available for 2011) that I have been honoured with this award.

The extra programma doesn`t need SQL it`s a small program that runs on it and doesn`t requirer many resources.
      We are keeping exchange in-house!

So buy SBS2011 and Server 2012 Standard (for Hyper-V and second server - you will still have one server license left over if you want to run say a Terminal Server)
        TIA
