  • SBS 2008 server not recognising Windows 7 workstations on domain

    Hi there,
I'm having real trouble here and was wondering if someone could please help

we have an sbs 2008 server configured with both dhcp and dns. We have recently run a DNS scavenge on the network and since then we have encountered problems with Windows 7 machines. The issue is that on both wireless and wired connections the network is showing as unauthenticated and the network location is set to home/work and not domain if left on DHCP. If you assign a static IP address the unauthenticated message dissapears however we are still left with the issue of the machine not being recognized on the domain
We have taken workstations off the domain and re-added them using the connect tool and assigning them a new computer name and they connect to the network as long as you leave the IP on DHCP, if you change to static you cannot access the //connect(the IE page is blank)
we have run the fix my network tool and it advised that there was a DNS A record missing, which it added back in however we are still unable to rectify the issue
All workstations can be seen in the console however you cannot access the machines or ping them from the server. This is only effecting Windows 7 machines

Here is the ipconfig /all from a client windows 7

we have also noticed the following error
Process MSEXCHANGEOWAAPPPOOL.CONFIG" -W "" -M 1 -AP "MSEXCHANGEOWAAPPPOOL (PID=11752). Exchange Active Directory Provider failed to obtain DNS records for forest DC=airedale,DC=local. DNS Priority and Weight for the Global Catalog servers in this forest will be set to the default values 0 (priority) and 100 (weight).

and the following entry in DNS, I'm not sure if it should be here...

(same as parent folder) Host (A)
192.168.1.2 static (our IP range is 196.168.16.1-255)

Sorry for the long message but I thought its best to provide all the information I have gathered

    Thanks in advance

Re: SBS 2008 server not recognising Windows 7 workstations on domain

What is that address 192.168.153.1 on the VMWare adaptor doing in there? It is also its own DNS. Perhaps that is causing your disconnect.
As we say there are only ever 3 problems with Active Directory: DNS; DNS; and DNS

Iím honoured to have been selected for the SMB 150 list for 2013. This is the third time in succession (no logo available for 2011) that I have been honoured with this award.

Re: SBS 2008 server not recognising Windows 7 workstations on domain

Thanks Teiger for coming back to me on this
I thought that was interfering with it too, but that's just on my machine and we are experiencing this on all Windows 7 workstations.

The thing that's confusing me is the DNS entry of 192.168.1.2 on the server, do you think this could be causing our problems?

      Thanks again

Re: SBS 2008 server not recognising Windows 7 workstations on domain

I assume your server is 192.168.16.2. So there should be no entry for DNS in the server pointing to 192.168.1.2. Remove it and/or run the fix my network wizard.
        TIA

Re: SBS 2008 server not recognising Windows 7 workstations on domain

Hi, sorry for the delay in responding,
looking further into this after restoring a working backup to a virtual machine I can see the following zones missing from within dns manager
          _sites
          _tcp
          _udp
          DomainDNSZones
          ForestDNSZones

when I delete these from the virtual server (to see if it causes an issue, I expect it would) they return before I can test.
They are still missing on the actual live server,
Please can someone advise on how to get these to replicate automatically?

          Thanks

Re: SBS 2008 server not recognising Windows 7 workstations on domain

            Just to provide an update,

A bare metal restore on a different machine restores the missing zones, so I presume that its restored by a reboot of the sever,

I have done a reboot on the server at the weekend(making sure I had a backup 1st)

and the zones are still missing.

Any ideas on why this is happening?

            Thanks

Re: SBS 2008 server not recognising Windows 7 workstations on domain

Those zones are created by the DC registering Server records with the DNS. You can get the same by the command "ipconfig /registerdns"

Your SBS should still be pointing only to itself on 192.168.16.2 (I presume) Any other A record for the server (apart from IPv6 addresses) is wrong.
              TIA
