  • Long delays for NDRs

This is something that I cannot find an answer to and I wondered if somebody could help. It is becoming a serious issue and I cannot see what is happening or why.

Basically we have a client with an SBS2003 server which by and large works fine - if an email is undeliverable the sender gets an NDR etc. - well most of the time it seems. What occurs though is something like an SMTP service restart or similar will trigger an influx of old NDRs (sometimes months old) into mailboxes. They seem to have lain hidden somewhere on the server and suddenly appear!

These are NDRs for outgoing mail (so local users) and seems to be largely 4.x.x type warnings (for greyisting etc.).

I have seen this elsewhere with SBS 2003 but not to this extent. Anybody any idea what may be causing this?

    Thanks

    Colin

    Re: Long delays for NDRs

well.. for a start, I'd be looking at what's causing your SMTPSVC to restart on it's own.

secondly.. on a daily basis, have a look over the queues.. maybe there's stuff stuck in there?

What else do you have installed - Exclaimer, or Antivirus/anti-spam utilities on the same server, something like that?

      Re: Long delays for NDRs

Thanks for the reply. I didn't say the SMTP service keeps restarting itself ... I said when it is restarted (i.e. maintenance)

Been checking the queues etc. regularly but all folders are empty (bad mail, drop, queue etc.). This stuff just seems to be 'hiding' somewhere and then bam arrives months later after say an MS update!

It is not all NDRs - most are delivered normally. Just some 'go missing' for a while. I have seen this on other SBS 2003 macines, but not as bad as this. Usually just the odd NDR.

Are you using the POP3 Connector? I think I recall an update that was related to the Connector but seemed to resolve these delayed/hidden NDR's also.

Thanks for that. That is an idea - I will take a look.

            This is the greylisting bug.
A hotfix was released for it some time ago:

                Re: Long delays for NDRs

So it was an update but not the one I remembered. Which leads me to the question, why the server is not being updated. People complain about having to reboot the server once a month after updates, but I believe that is nothing compared to the problems caused such as this one.
So while you can, please update (Remember 2003 + 10 = 2013; so next year the updates will be reduced)
                TIA

                  Re: Long delays for NDRs

The server is fully up to date and patched - the Windows Update service downloads updates automatically and they are installed out of hours. This was NOT an unpatched server. The hotfix is for Exchange 2003 which is running SP2 but not every released hotfix. MS recommend only applying hotfixes if you have a problem.
