  • System/Computer Properties, Win Updates windows won't open/show

    Hi There,

After an update, I can not view/open System/Computer Properties, Win Updates anymore

In a split second, I can see a windows trying to pop, but then it disappeared

I have try to un-install the last update, but still no avail

    I have tried:
    - Right-click - properties on "Computer" on "Start" menu
    - Right-click - properties on "Computer" on Desktop
    - Right-click - properties on "Computer" from Windows Explorer
    - Double-click "System" from Control Panel
    - Double-click "Windows Update" from Control Panel
    - Execute "wuapp.exe" from Command-Prompt

To solve it, I have tried:
    - Removing my antivirus (ESET Mail Security)
    - Have tried to reset WUA with these following step:
    net.exe stop wuauserv
    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 wups.dll
    regsvr32 wuweb.dll
    regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
    net.exe start wuauserv

What other things I still can do:
    - Execute "sysdm.cpl" from Command-Prompt, but only give me "Xp like" properties
    - Execute "msinfo32.exe" from Command-Prompt working fine
    - All other function on Control Panel still functioning OK except "Windows Update" and "System"
    - All Server functionalities still working perfectly fine
    - I still can re-start or shutdown and turn-on my server without any issue
    - All Administratives Tools are functioning OK (even SBS Advance Console)
    - No Error on Event Viewer (within Application or System)

    System Information (from msinfo32.exe)
OS Name: Server 2008 Standard FE
    Version: 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Build 6002
    Server: IBM x3650
    CPU: Dual Xeon E5430
    RAM: 4094 MB

I know it might not a big deal to open/view "System Properties", but if even this doesn't work, it scares the hell out of me what will happen next with this SBS.
Also, obviously I will need to update the server

Any suggestions, opinions, or whatever I can try will be much appreciated

    Cheers,

    Phillipus

Can you confirm this is SBS and not regular Server 2008?

      Hi Ossian,

      Yes, confirmed 110%
Because my college is the one installed that server, and only SBS can show "SBS Console" right?

      Cheers,

Yes -- it was the "OS Name: Server 2008 Standard FE" that got me worried...

I would be tempted to start by looking for MalWare on your server

Re: System/Computer Properties, Win Updates windows won't open/show

          Hi Ossian,

I should put it on my first note that after removing the antivirus, I scanned with:
          - Malwarebytes
          - PC Doctor

          All resulting OK

This where I am starting to loose my hair off....

          Cheers,

Have you tried running sfc /scannow ?
            1 1 was a racehorse.
            2 2 was 1 2.

              Thank for your reply,

@ STE: good thinking, and just run it.
Guess what? Windows said everything OK:

              Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

              C:\Users\Administrator>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
              Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Hope someone still reading this thread
                Recently I did:

Microsoft Safety Scanner - Completed OK, no virus, malware, etc (after 1hr 15mins)
Small Business Server 2008 Best Practices Analyzer - OK
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition (KB947821) [February 2012] - OK

Still scratching my head over this problem
Anyone willing to give any opinion, more than welcome

                  Still reading and still puzzled.

Do you remember what the Update was that you installed before you had this problem?
Have you tried running wuapp.exe manually to see if it will bring the Windows Update window?
Have you checked the Local Security Policy to see if something from there is locking you out?
                  1 1 was a racehorse.

Re: System/Computer Properties, Win Updates windows won't open/show

                    Hi there,

Just thinking to re-build this server...
This server has exchange database (edb file) on seperate drive (just say on D drive)
If I re-install the server, create same user (user full name and account name),
can I just mount the edb file?
Will the server re-map account name and its mailbox?

                    Cheers,

                    Phillipus

Don't give up yet. Rebuilding is not a simple job since you have Exchange and presumably clients attached as well as other items that we don't know about.

Have you tried running wuapp.exe from the Run box?
                      1 1 was a racehorse.

Re: System/Computer Properties, Win Updates windows won't open/show

                        Hi biggles77,

Yes, I did at the beggining of my frustation along with running all commands to reset WUA
Apart from exchange, file-printer charing, this client of mine only has about 5-6 workstations and never use sharepoint

My obstacle will be the exchange edb.
If I re-install the server, create the same domain name (mybusiness.local) and create the same users (full name and account name), attach/mount the edb, will this work?

On an update, I just found one funny thing
Open up "Services", I found the description of "Software Services" has written:
<Failed to Read Description. Error Code: 1168 >

Even though, I can restart "Software Services" fine, and restart through cmd as well
When I ask Mr. Google about this 1168 error, it pretty much didn't say much
Most of other victims has a clue from Event Viewer to catch the culprit
Where as mine, is non, it is a beautiful Event Viewer....

But still, what do you think about the edb?

                        Cheers,

                        Phillipus

Sorry, missed the wuapp.exe in your first post.

Re the edb, I assume it is going to be as similar with SBS as it was for the Exchange Server that I had to rebuild however it may pay to confirm that with someone who is more current with Exchange than I am.

There still should be a fix for it. If you have a TechNet subscription it would be worth using one of the two free support calls to MS and see if they have a solution.

If you have only 5-6 workstations and if their mailboxes aren't too large, perhaps you could just export all the data to individual PST files. I know that ruins archiving etc, but it mat be a simpler solution that trying to mount the mailbox store in a new setup.
                            TIA

                              Thanks a lot guys
I end up re-installing the server, export mail to PST and import it back to exchange
Well, I suppose, there are always un-answered questions within SBS, no matter good-and-cheap it is, its just SBS...

                              Thanks again for your support
