  • Install SBS 2011 on HP hardware fails "illegal copy"

Apologies if information is incomplete -- I am off site
Installing SBS 2011 on new HP server using SmartStart media (8.7?). OEM copy of SBS 2011 Standard
    Process
Boot from SmartStart media and select OS.
Follow instructions on SmartStart and SBS
All seems to go OK up to and including entering organisation information, servername, admin user and password
Goes through "Expanding files" and then server shuts down with brief message "Illegal Copy of OS" (or similar wording)
Restart server and goes back to "Expanding Files" (no request to re-enter info)

(Note copy is legal, but I never get a chance to enter the product key)

I am going to try a straight install from the SBS media unless anyone has any bright ideas for this problem

Update -- left the damn thing running all day and on return, it had got to the logon stage
Dunno what happened -- it is still saying SBS is overdue for activation

I've seen that activation is overdue prompt a few times during migration, and every time it's been a failed migration. Never seen it on a clean install though, anything showing in installation issues on the SBS Console?

I have had this activation issue occur when the BIOS time wasn't correct.
The server comes up, connects to the internet and gets its time corrected immediately.

          Ah -- good call
So when I unplugged the LAN connection and left it, it decided to work

Sembee is right. if you RTFM somewhere it warns you about setting the BIOS time before you start. ALso watch you don't suddenly change teh time zone - it has the same effect - but you should be plugged in to a switch for installation. I usually connect it to an old 8-port I carry around. You need the network card running for DNS, DHCP and AD to install correctly.
