  • SBS 2003 RPC over http

    really need your expertise here....

I am working on an SBS 2003 server, with self signed cert. trying to get RPC over http to work.

OWA works fine, and all configuration, reg edits are correct... and firewall and NAt is setup as it should be as well as the iis configuration.

I have added the cert into the trusted store on the client store... but i cant get rpc to work ?!

any guidance or obvious (or less obvious) gotchas on sbs 2003 i may have missed ?

    Thanks in advance

When Outlook is open, hold the CTRL key and Right click on the icon in the System Tray and then left click Connection Status. What does it tell you? HTTPS or TCP?

Are you trying this inside or outside the network?
What version of Outlook are you using?
Have you configured Outlook to use RPC/HTTPS?
Have you printed out and followed the instructions that are available from:
http://domainname.local/remote (logon) and print the instructions from the Additional Link box in the mid right side of the page?

Re: SBS 2003 RPC over http

I can connect internally using RPC( checking connection status on system tray)

I have connected ONE machine externally( it didnt work yesterday and after a reboot) it did

It is using a self signed cert and i have added those to the trusted root domain on the clients....

but no others will connect ?

outlook 2010 has worked cant get 2003 to work...I have done this 1000000 times (slight exageration) im confused why its flaky....

Yes i have configered Outlook to use RPC/HTTPS?

on my setups i have never used the proxy thing...

UPDATE - and need some advice/thoughts on this if possible

I have managed to get external clients to connect... (3 in total now) it seems when i do check name if i log into OWA via a browser... then outlook client then is able to connect... after that the RPC works fine on the outlook client... if i dont do that... the outlook client will hang...and not connect... ?

        IS that normal ?

          start outlook with /rpcdiag switch
then watch and see what happens.

Re: SBS 2003 RPC over http

            When i do that,

with just adding the RCP settings into outlook... it tries http as the connection but hangs and fails....

If log into OWA authenticate and do the /rpcdiag switch then try it works perfectly.

Once this has happened the first time, then RPC works perfectly after that ?

it seems it needs the owa connection to authenticate ?

Never needed to do this for any other rpc connection i have done ? - is that right ?

turn on outlook debug logging, and see what the debug logs say
