  • Options for moving computers between domains?

    Good morning guys-

What is the safest / fastest / easiest (or combo of all), to move 30 computers to a new domain?

    Source: SBS2003

We'd like to pay it as pain-free for the employees as possible. They'll still have the same login credentials.

Desktop, Wallpaper, Documents*, application configurations, etc..
I'd hate to see them freak out when their puppy isn't on their wallpaper tomorrow!

    *synced with existing server

    Thanks in advance

Shame that's not a Windows 2003 as you could have used the

With SBS you're going to have to use a more manual route. You could use the migration wizard (USMT User State Migration Tool aka Migwiz.exe) to move profile information which is somewhat dependent on the desktop OS version. Unless you're doing an entire migration of all services to a new server/domain/infrastructure then your only option with SBS is to recreate users and add the computers to the domain manually. What OS is the target domain?

SBS 2011 Standard is the target OS.

I just learned we are keeping the same domain name,
does that change anything in your opinion?

The domain name is immaterial. Unless you're doing a complete swing migration you have many options other than a manual approach. SBS doesn't support domain trusts unfortunately. That said i have no experience with SBS 2011. Im sure one of the other regular posters can confirm if there are any native utilities within SBS 2011 that will allow for this.

Everyone is talking about Swing Migrations recently, but is the only way to do one is to go through the www.swingmigration.com ?

I tried to call them, and left 3 voicemails before I gave up.
I'm not sure what it is exactly, but everyone talks about it!

It's documentation (step by step instructions) along with some customised scripts that show you how to swing your SBS installation to another server. It's actually a very good suite that makes the job of moving SBS to another server relatively painless. Im sure i have a copy of it kicking around somewhere but mine is quite old as i don't do much work with SBS any more.

Send Jeff an email. He always replied and often within 10 minutes if I send at the appropriate time (about a 15 hour time difference from me).
