  • AD Users and Computers freezes when adding new computer.

FYI: SBS Server 2003 with all current updates.

Every time I try to manually add a computer to AD through the 'Users and Computers' snap-in, the snap-in freezes. Otherwise, everything else functions perfectly.

After installing the admin pack on my normal workstation, I found I can add computers remotely without a problem. Running 'h t t p ://<servername>/connectcomputer' also successfully adds new computers.

I realize I have a work-around for it, but I would still like to address the problem.

I haven't been able to correlate the problem with anything (updates, etc.).

Running dcdiag -v didn't return any errors.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Have you tried installing the admin tools on a workstation and trying from there?
    Anything in event logs?

I did install the admin tools on a workstation and was able to add computers normally.

Nothing abnormal in the event log.

You could try running adminpak.msi on the SBS box to reinstall ADUC but I don't know how that will go with the Exchange-enabled ADUC.

btw, I'm moving this thread to the SBS forum

I re-installed adminpak.msi and that solved the problem. Thanks!

In case anyone goes through this, adminpak.msi must reside inside the system32 folder for it to install properly.

technically, with SBS, I'd argue that using the http://connect wizard isn't really a "workaround" so much as the correct way that SBS expects it to be done..

And technically, http://connect is the SBS 2008 way - you meant http://<servername>/connectcomputer.
But I definitely agree with the gist of your post.
