  • SBS backup tape changer

How is it that some systems will offer the selection of the tape changer and some won't. Is it because I'm not using a tape but an external disk? This shouldn't make a difference. There should still be a least an option to select a changer. I see why MS thought you won't need that with an external drive but if you use many of them it would be handy. Is there a way to make it show in the wizard?

Keep in mind NTBackup is very basic software. You can get more sophisticated backup software at a suitable price.

True but for a small company it would be difficult to justify spending the extra money just to get this bit working especially in these difficult times. Setting up a reminder in Outlook would do the job just fine if not the "postpone" button. Getting a message from the server's Admin looks more like something that needs to be taken care of right away.

Why would there be an option to select a device that doesn't exist? That seems counterintuitive to me.

Well, it is a Microsoft product

            Re: SBS backup tape changer

If you think about it it's not that counter-intuitive at all. When setting up the backup you get a choice of a tape or a folder. External drives is not something that was invented after 2003 Server was released so an external drive is another next to a tape natural choice for a backup solution. Considering that while 2003 was still on a sketchboard external drives were cheap enough to get one for each day which in turn would mean someone would need to keep swapping them it would make sense to take into consideration when creating the backup wizard. Obviously it would be difficult for the system to be aware that we're using drives instead of tapes but then again why just not put "backup media changer" in the wizard? Then again, as Ossian pointed out it's a Microsoft product...
