  • How to remove an Orphaned Domain Controller

I am wondering how best to remove and Orphaned AD Domain Controller. A customer has an SBS2008 server running as a Domain Controller. They had an original Server 2008, also acting as a Domain Controller, but they pulled the server off line some months ago and got rid of it.

My problem is that the SBS2008 server will not allow me to install Exchange SP3 because it needs to synchronize with the other DC before proceeding.

There are other problems that I am attributing to the Orphaned DC. What is the best approach to removing this DC and clean up Active Directory.

I am reading articles that give you detailed instructions on removing in a mixed environment (2000/2003/200 and then I read other articles that say it is easier in 2008. I am confused.

This is a good list of steps ~ http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...78(WS.10).aspx

After following those steps, go into DNS and remove all references to the old DC in *every* node.

Since this is SBS 2008, you might also want to run the Fix My Network wizard.
