  • SBS2003 to SBS2011 - how to use te old hardware

We are currently using one server with SBS2003 with SQL2005 and thinking of migrating to SBS2011 with premium add-on on new hardware. I was thinking of keeping the old SQL server for testing and olap. This would be the configuration.

    New server:
    - SBS2011 + the new SQL server 2008

    Old server:
    - use the licence from premium add-on to install win2008
    - use the SQL 2005 from the old SBS2003

Is it possible to re-use the SQL2005 license from the old SBS?

    Thank you

If you are using Premium then you get SQL. As long as you don't install that SQL licence on to the SBS server, then you can install it or an older version on to the second server - that is the entire point.

However if the server is quite old then you may well have to downgrade as Windows 2008 R2 is 64 bit only.

Your best option is to speak to Microsoft with regards to downgrade rights. Only they can answer the licencing questions.
