  • WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 full with large log files

Have a a SBS 2003 and the drive c: is running out of space

After careful looking I found that the following pad C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 is getting full with large log files

After doing a google serach I found this files a log files created either by ISS or exchange OWA and they are safe to delete

However I would like to know the reason why this files started to grow on size from 17MB to over 500MB and then to over 1GB within last week

    Thank you

Re: WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 full with large log files

This folder is indeed used to store logfiles from IIS. I don't know SBS but I would think you've had a large increase in traffic to that server which is resulted in the increase in logs.

You can configure what is captured in the logs from within the website config in IIS. A busy site can generate massive logs fast.

The logs themselves should be relatively readable so going through a couple of the logs should indicate the increased traffic areas. Compare an old one with a newer log.

Feel free to delete older ones, zero impact unless you keep them for auditing.

Thank you for the fast reply

After looking at one of the log files I saw that one of the users mobile device is sending a large amount of request to the server

Here is one of the line in the log ( I change theusername and domain ), the log shows the exchange-oma getting up to 25 request persecond from this user

clearly nokiamail is going a bit dodgy.
just setup a script to archive your logs, or delete any that are older than say 14 days.

the other IIS directory you'll find problems with on an sbs server is the WSUS log files - they get huge
