  • SBS2008 DNS setup

I've got the SBS box in the main office and than a 2008 standard that's a DC as well at a remote site. Both sites are connected via Lan-to-Lan VPN. The sites are in separate subnets. What would be the best setup for DNS? Since it's an SBS domain I can't have subdomains can I? How do I get the http://connect website to work?

If you mean internal DNS, then sub domains in Windows isn't possible. However the domain controller can be a member of the main domain and you should be able to setup Sites and Services with a second subnet. As long as the second domain controller has the DNS server role, is a Global Catalog, it should work and the DNS changes that SBS make will continue to work.

So it's not like I need to set up a primary DNS zone for the brunch then and a stub zone pointing to the main server to avoid all the DNS queries going to the main office server?

Not at all. Just create the domain controller in the usual way, with DNS enabled. AD should then replicate the DNS to that domain controller. In the second site, ensure that DHCP etc uses just that domain controller for DNS.

One problem after doing that. When I go to DNS server properties on the brunch server it points to itself as the primary DNS server in SOA. I can't change it to point to the main office server as when clicking Browse it's simply not there.

That's the way it's supposed to be with AD integrated DNS zones. Each DC/DNS server will hold a copy of the AD integrated zones and each will be the SOA/Master/Primary server for that copy of the zone. It's perfectly normal and is as it should be.
