  • SBS 2003 to SBS2011 Migration Advice

    Hi,

We tried migrating from sbs03 to sbs11 but couldn't get it working right. We are now considering a clean install, would the following plan work:

There are 2 DC's, sbs03 and a Win03 R2. Is it possible to promote the new sbs11 into the existing domain as a DC then uninstall/decommission the existing old sbs03 and transfer all the FSMO roles to the sbs11?
After that setup the the users on fresh exchange accounts and import their old mail into the new account?

    Thanks,

I don't think you will be able to install Exchange since the previous Exchange will still be in the AD.
Is the old domain still working? Then first run the SBS-BPA and fix any problems it throws up. Next, go to the Technet site and read the documents on migration CAREFULLY. Don't miss out ANY steps. Then it should just work!
    TIA

      Hello ITW,

Unfortuneatly I cannot make a post with a link at the moment however, a quick google for 'sbs 2011 migration guide' should display a result for 'Migrate to Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard from Windows Small Business Server 2003' on Microsoft's technet.

      Hope this helps.

DCdiag indicated a problem with one of the FSMO roles. Resolved that and then the migration went through.

A new install forces you to create a new domain so no way to promote manually in the existing domain.

Still doesn't change the fact that migration in a live environment is painful.

I believe the opposite is true! A migration forces you to keep the same domain name, but, unless you do a swing migration, you are forced to change the server name. This means that shares, shortcuts and printers etc now point to the wrong place and all that entails.
