  • Machine domain authentication fails

Just recovered an sbs 2003 server, only dc for the domain.
The server was recovered from an image that was a couple of months old.
Removed and readded workstatios to the domain. changed machine name.
The next day I am getting a a login failure due to the trust relationship between the machine and the DC.
removed and readded the machine again changed name again.

Used netdom to reset the machine account password.
Error: The machine account password for the local machine could not be reset
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
    I just readded the machine
Do I need to netdom the servers secure password?

    Re: Machine domain authentication fails

In a similar incident recently, I simply went into the work station in question and on the Computer properties/Machine name tab, ran the Network ID wizard to "join" the domain using th administrator password.
This seems to have cured the problem

Iím honoured to have been selected for the SMB 150 list for 2013. This is the third time in succession (no logo available for 2011) that I have been honoured with this award.

      Re: Machine domain authentication fails

the problem you're likely finding is either tombstone (180 days, iirc) or just that the machine passwords are changing and everything is out of sync

depart and rejoin is the best option usually.
