  • SBS 2008 Backup - Can you backup to a diff partition on a Single Internal disk?

Apologies for the confusing thread title!

    This is the scenario

    Dell Server with 1TB Raid5 Array split into 3 partitions (C:, D:, and E
SBS server sees this as Disk 0 in Disk Management

SBS backup does not show partitions D: or E: as valid destinations for backups when running the backup wizard. I assume this is because as far as SBS is concerned they are on Disk 0 which also contains system files?

If I want to do a local disk based backup I assume I either have to add an external USB disk or a new entirely seperate internal disk that SBS will pickup as something other than Disk 0?

Just after confirmation that my understanding is correct?

    Thanks

    Paul

Server 2008 backup is to a dedicated volume or (IIRC) a network share so you could try creating a share locally and backing up to \\servername\sharename.

AFAIK SBS is no different, but an expert will no doubt correct me

I'll give that a try and let you know.

For the record - adding an additional internal drive (that appears as Drive 1 in disk management) works and is recognised as a valid backup destination.

Is it accessible as a regular drive too?
Just curious -- in vanilla 2008 it would be dedicated to backups but SBS may be different

Same as in 2008 - once it's used as a backup volume, it dissapears from the OS and you cant access it.

I also setup a share on the E: partition of the original disk and this isnt available as a valid backup destination if you are backing up the entire system.

SBS removes the Drive letter from the External Drive and gives it a label - stick this to the disk, if you want to be able to change disks and identify them later.
