  • how to clean up C drive?

I did a good amount of research and made my C:\ Drive 80 Gb when I installed my SBS 2008 system, several people said this was more then enough in size. The "data drive" is Z:\ and it got 300Gb. Everything that can be moved is on the Z:\ drive (shared folders, exchange server data, WUSU data, other)

My current C:\ drive size is down to 6Gb and I'm getting warning 20 times a day about this.

Is there anything that can be cleaned up or removed from the c:\ drive w/o issues?

I have no bulky or unnecessary program short of VNC and my AVG Business Addition.

    Suggestions?

Check individual directories for size and home in on the big ones.
Move the swap file to the Z drive (2xRAM fixed size, IMHO) leaving 16Mb on the C drive
    Clean temp directories
    Delete un-needed user profiles

Great info! I was just reading up if it was OK to move swap file on SBS2008 systems, so thank you for clarifying that need.

Can you give me a short answer on what temp directories can be cleaned up.

      Thank you.

Any ones that have files *.tmp or the filename starts with a tilde ~
Any folders with the name TEMP can be cleared out.
Reduce the size of the System Restore capacity if necessary.
Reduce the size of the Shadow Copy capacity or modify the creation times.

Re: how to clean up C drive?

18 months ago I would have agreed that 80gb was enough (it is also the minimum amount that SBS will let you install with), now I would disagree. Even on my test systems, which have no users at all, 80gb isn't enough. I now deploy with at least 120gb for the C drive (usually a 160gb drive pair in a mirror).

SBS 2008 seems to chew through disk space. If this is a fresh installation then the biggest user outside of the data that you can move is the automatic updates cache.
Therefore after a fresh installation has installed all of its updates, I will reset automatic updates using the script here: http://wuauclt.info/scripts.asp
That can release 4 or 5gb of space.

WSUS logs can also chew up space quite quickly, and you will find lots of references to turning off logging in IIS for certain areas as they will take space away.

Also check out that Sharepoint isn't creating Logs that are 1Gb in size; info in the SBS Blog

              c:\windows\system32\logfiles\
              empty recycler
look for locally cached profiles on the server itself - these can be large v(and separate to the roaming or redirected profiles on your home shares)
get TreeSize, run that and look at foldesr that look unusually large.
              look for *.dmp files
Remember your page file on the C: drive is taking up a chunk of space too

If there are big files in C:\Windows\installer, and you are short of disk space on drive C: you can clean up that folder very carefully as follows:

You download the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool from Microsoft from http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...bd/msicuu2.exe which comes with a command line utility called msizap.exe. After installing the tool, run:

                "C:\Program Files\Windows Installer Clean Up\msizap" G!

Yes that command does end with an exclamation mark.

I see from your post that you say you have very few programs installed, which may imply my post is not useful, but have a look at the size of C:\Windows\installer just to check, and this may help if it is big.
                Best wishes,
                PaulH.

Re: how to clean up C drive?

TreeSize Free helped me find where my problems where. I had e.g. a SharePoint log that was 6GB.

I found some really good tips in a blog post with the title "Recovering “Hidden” Disk Space Used on SBS 2008 C: partitions". Can't post URLs yet so you have to find it yourself.

The solution for me was moving the swap file over to my data drive, this was a tech 101 solution I should have known. It freed more then enough space for now but if it eats up the 20gb I now have to go with the other solutions here.
