  • RDP on SBS08 Domain Clents

    Hello everyone,

First of all, please allow me to apologize if this post is a repeat: I tried searching the forum and on Google but could never adjust my search terms to retrieve relevant results.

    The Issue:
Replaced a SBS03 box with a shiny new SBS08 box. Did not transition the domain: started fresh. Everything is working and good except for that when I added (some of) the clients to the new domain their Remote Desktop stopped working. Nothing on the firewall/gateway has changed. The IP addresses of the machines have remained the same (static entries on the SBS08 DHCP server) so I'm fairly certain that networking is not to blame.

I've opened the live log on the server and can see that traffic is passing through as desired so I know it's not the firewall rules. The main reason I don't think that the problem is related to networking: there are two XP clients that haven't been added to the new domain and they work just fine.

RDP works internally (non-NAT) from any client on the LAN (domain or otherwise).

    Question:
Is there a default group policy or something that would interfere with remote desktop with the computers that have been joined to the domain? The only thing that has changed on these XP clients is that they've been added to this new SBS08 domain.

what do you mean "it stopped working"
i'm pretty much 100% certain that it doesn't just "stop working' without at least giving you some sort of diagnostic tool, often called an Error Message.

Did you join the workstations to the new domain by using the //connect site? If not then you could be asking for trouble -- or a long troubleshooting session, at least

Re: RDP on SBS08 Domain Clents

Ok... "Stopped working" Here's what happens now step for step:
        1. On my Windows PC that is connected to the internet I execute mstsc and type in the address and port of the client that I want to connect to
        2. I enter my credentials: <Domain name>.local\<username> and password.
        3. Click connect.... after about 30 seconds or so it times out and tells me "Remote Desktop can' connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons..."

If I watch the firewall traffic I see that the connection is accepted and then forwarded to TCP 3389 as it should be but it never connects. This always worked prior to the change to the SBS08 server/domain.

Workstations were joined to the domain by editing computer properties > Computer Name > Network ID...

Re: RDP on SBS08 Domain Clents

Are you trying to connect directly to a workstation from an external connection?

Can you connect if you log into https://remote.yourdomainame.com and then click on connect to a computer?

Also if you want to direct RDP and have a valid SSL cert, you enter the internal name and on the advanced tab and connect from anywhere, you set the TS gateway to remote.yourdomainname.com and then it logs you in, providing you have enabled remote access to the computer from the SBS console

Re: RDP on SBS08 Domain Clents

Just to reinforce the post above this and my previous post.
Connect to the domain via the //connect site
Use https://remote.domain.com/ to connect to the Remote web page displayed.
It just works, you need 443 and 987 open on your router/firewall
You need the SSL cert on your workstation.
Then you are good to go.
