  • SBS 2008 – Retail License – Virtualization

I have SBS 2008 standard install and when I run slmgr /dlv then it says I have Retail Channel license. If I virtualize this server then will I come across any activation issue?

did you buy the licence with a piece of hardware ?
    - specifically, is it an OEM licence ?

OEM is not relevant here. It is the fact that it is SBS Standard. Standard does not include any license for virtualisation, unless you use the free Hyper-V core service. To virtualise with a GUI, you need another edition of Windows Standard Server.
At least that was the official position when 2008 was released - it may have been changed since.

I’m honoured to have been selected for the SMB 150 list for 2013. This is the third time in succession (no logo available for 2011) that I have been honoured with this award.

but isn't a licence to run the OS just a licence to run it?
with obvious exceptions of things like OEM equipment is tied to a specific item of hardwar etc

          loveall27,

No you should not have any issue activitating it. If you do, there should be another product key on the COA or disk for a virtual install. You can change product keys to that one after you virtualize. And no you do not need to buy Windows Server license nor SBS Premium to virtualize SBS. You can download and use the free Hyper-V Server.

Re: SBS 2008 – Retail License – Virtualization

According to below, for the Standard edition you are licensed to either use an instance of the OS on a physical machine or a VM but not on both.

Yeah, trying to reinforce what you were saying Steven. When it comes to licensing, sometimes even hearing it from the "horses mouth" it might not be enough.
Am surprised they haven't come up yet with a license for being licensed

Re: SBS 2008 – Retail License – Virtualization

Do you mean you have to be licenced to give licence advice to those who want licencing advice about how many licences they may need to fulfil the licence requirements for the licenced software that they may not have enough licences for.

Well that seems fairly straight forward. Click image for larger version

I think MS are considering a licensing category for MVP.
Whenever I need licensing interpretation I phone MS Licensing several times until I can find someone who will agree with my interpretation, write down his/her name and then carry on!
