  • how to connect Server 2003 R2 to SBS 2008 with http://connect?

I'm need to put a Server 2003 R2 system on our SBS 2008 domain to run specialized software. I want the SBS centralized interface to admin the updates and such as it does for all clients. This Server 2003 R2 WILL NOT be a AD/DNS machine...I already have another 2003 install doing that.

When I try to run http://connect I get a message about this functionality only working with XP SP2+, Vista ect.

Of course I know how to add a pc/server to the domain in the traditional sense, but I'm assuming all the functionality of managing security and updates will not be reported or managed as expected.

Can some shed some light on how to get all this connected...or is the an "on purpose" limitation of SBS? I've got that 2nd DNS/AD hooked in just fine but that was with a DCPROMO functionality.

EDIT: A friend commented that adding to a domain in a traditional way will still hook everything in as hoped...can any one confirm or deny this before I try tomorrow?

The wizard is useful, and recommended for clients, but not required.
You will need to move the server out of "unassigned computers" in WSUS but everything else should be fine

thanks...just did it and all looks well. And even in WSUS it was in the Update Services Server Computers...so it wasn't "unassigned"!

and also make sure you move it into a relevant Computers OU, rather than the computers Container at the root.

Thanks. Just followed up on your comment and looks like everything put the client in the right spot in my SBS Computers as expected even knowing it was a non-AD/DNS "server".

If you use RWW (Remote Web Workplace), you may find it is missing from the list of servers there, but the SBS blog tells you how to fix that in the registry.
