  • Workstations firewall disable on SBS 2K8 domain

    Hello everyone,

All my workstations firewall are turned Off (XP or 7) on our SBS 2008 domain. I looked at the GPO Windows SBS Client - Windows XP Policy and Vista and I think it is enable, but I'm not exactly sure where to look. And it is that way since the migraiton from SBS 2003.

    Any suggestion?

    Thanks!

    Nicolas

whatr happens if you try and turn the firewall on manually on the individual computer, then run gpupdate /force?

Also - what tells you the firewall is off? have you checked for the firewall service? maybe it's been disabled through the restricted services.

IIRC SBS GPO has two firewall policies: on-domain the firewall is turned off and does not interfere with local traffic; off-domain and the firewall is on and you have to configure the various "holes" - though some defaults are defined for you. Useful for laptops.

        Hello,

I can't manually turn on the firewall because it's greyed out. The Firewall service is on. However, when I do the command "netsh firewall show state" it says that it is disabled or not active (sorry mine is in french, but it is definitively not enabled). And when I look in control panel - security center - firewall it's turned off by Group Policy.

        Thanks for any idea!

If you MUST then change the Group Policy

I just found out what was the problem. I was looking at the GPO Windows SBS Client - Windows XP Policy and Windows SBS Client - Windows Vista Policy. However, it was in the GPO Windows SBS Client Policy that it was turned off. The thing is that I really don't know why it was turned off, but now it is working.

Thanks and have a nice day!

But you haven't explained WHY you want to do that!
