  • Server 2003 R2 as 2nd DC to SBS 2008

I'm not finding a lot of info on the intertubes on this topic. I want to add a 2nd DC to our network and already have several Server 2003 R2 licenses available. Has anyone had any success or difficulties with this arrangement?

I had another post on this topic about adding a 2nd server but wasn't 100% clear about it being 2003 and getting input from others on that system.

We elected to get SBS2008 Standard due to no need for Sql Server and the additional cost, so we didn't take advantage of the 2nd Server 2008 License for those who are wondering why 2003 R2

Check the Forest & Domain Functional Level and see what it is at. If 2003 then you can install the 2003 Server ad a DC. If the Levels are at 2008 then 2003 DC is not possible.

I don't have SBS2008 that I can check with but SBS2003 has the Forest & Domain Functional Level set at 2000 so I am guessing the SBS2008 will be set to the previous O/S as well. The Level can be checked in ADUC or ADD&T.

Thank you, great info. I just looked at the ADUC as you mentioned and found the domain and forest function levels are set to 2003 on a default SBS2008 install, so I'm in luck...see screenshot.

        Hi Carbon

Yeah looks like you are in luck. Just remember with the SBS environment the SBS server needs to hold the FSMO roles.
