  • WIN SBS 2003 SMTP traffic increased

    Does anybody had before this issue and can give me a help to sort it out. Since 2 day ago my server win 2003 is eating a lot of te broadband, and after i checked where is going everything i seen that SMTP service is taking all the broadband, i have huge pings e.g. 700-800 ms and there is no mail incoming or going and of course i see some strange IP from different locations.

    Check your logs and see if you are an open spam relay

      The usual reason is that the server is being abused.
      Look in the queues in ESM to see if there are lots of messages queued. If you are using a smart host though, they will be blank.

      As well as being an open relay, it could also be an authenticated relay or an NDR attack.
      Exchange 2003 is relay secure by default, so unless you have changed something, particularly outside of the wizards, then it is most likely to be the two others. I have discussed them on my web site here: http://www.amset.info/exchange/spam-cleanup.asp
