Not an ISA issue but a remote host issue from the looks of things. Your client really should be upgrading to a more recent OS though.

had a similar issue with pop3 on sbs2003.
logon to the srver, and ensure the imap srvice is running under services
then, using ESM (or the equivalent for sbs2000) check to ensure the imap virtual server is running.

our scenario was, occasionally after a reboot, pop3 Service would start, but pop3 virtual service would not.
restarting the pop3 service led to a hang of the service. eventually i found that while the service was running, the virtual server wasn;t, and that i could start that with no problems.

        hope this helps..

Just to enforce what Cruachan is saying; support for SBS 2000 is probably going away in July 2010 (this year)

              Re: IMAPS Issue with ISA

when you telnet to the imap service, as identified in your first post, are you attempting that telnet from outside the network, or from on the sbs server itself ?

Since you are publishing IMAPs, yes you need a valid certificate.
Check your certificate store to see if any certificates have expired. Both on the Exchange Server as the ISA server (if needed)
