  • Cannot add Windows 7 laptop to SBS2008 domain

    Hi Guys,

    First post so be gentle...

I have recently upgraded our file / DB server from an old XP box to an SBS 2008 rack hosting a windows domain. The domain is called "PRESTIGE" and the server hostname is predbfileserver.prestige.local with the IP 192.168.1.2. We currently have 4 desktops connected all of which are running XP pro and all of which connect fine to the domain. These are named STATION01-04. Due to various bad capacitor issues with my previous desktop (dont ask!) I have started to use my Windows 7 Ultimate N laptop on the network. I have renamed this to STATION05 and added it into the Active Directory on the SBS2008 server. When I try to connect to the domain using the join a network wizard, I get as far as typing in my domain username and password and I get the following message:

"Your computer could not be joined to ther domain because the following error has occurred:

The network path was not found".

I have run an ipconfig on my laptop and got the following:

I dont know much about windows domains, but I havent done anything different to what I did for the XP pro boxes and those worked fine. I have also tried disabling the firewall on my laptop but that doesnt help much. I should note that I can still access all of the other computers (including the server) from my laptop, I just cant join the domain.

    Any ideas??

    Thanks,

    Chodhead

can you ping domainame.TLD from your win7 machine ?

    could be a DNS issue..

Re: Cannot add Windows 7 laptop to SBS2008 domain

Have you created a computer account on the SBS? Are you trying to add the computer via the http://connect site? Have you run all the updates to add Win7 to the types of computers allowed to join the domain?
      TIA

Add computer account in AD and then try to participate in Domain see if that works

Swamy, this is SBS and it is against the law NOT to use the Wizards. If the Wizard isn't working then there is likely to be a deeper issue that needs to be retified. Assuming it is the appropriate version of Windows 7 (not Home etc ) then anyone can join it to a Domain.

make sure U can ping sbs server by name, not by IP address.Make sure that sbs server is running DNS server and is DNS of itself.check that you type domain name promptly when trying to join it.try add .local after domain name i.e. if domain name is domain - type domain.localCan U see SBS server in my network places?

              can you ping the FQDN?

Add the servers IP and hostname into your hosts file .

Re: Cannot add Windows 7 laptop to SBS2008 domain

You should never need to use a hosts file - if so, you have serious network problems. As Biggles77 correctly states, in his own inimitable way, you should not be futzing around in AD to add a computer to an SBS network. SBS 2008 creates a site called http://connect/ after you have run the setup and wizards. You use a wizard to create a domain computer account and the connect site to join the computer to the domain.
Do it another way and you are on your own!!
                TIA
