      Re: update service computer policy

yes, but what the purpose of doing this

as you can check there are
      2 ou
      sbscomputer
      sbsserver

      and 2 policies
      update service client computer
      update service server computer

but those two linked to the entire domain
instaid of one to each ou

      so, i start wondering
      if microsoft has done this
could it be that in sbs 2008
they have beside the ou structure
      another method?

      thanks

        Re: update service computer policy

I'm not completely understanding your question, but here's how I interpreted it:

Q: Why are there Windows Update settings under Computer Configuration and also under User Configuration?

A: Because the two sets of settings control Computer settings related to Windows Update and also control User settings related to Windows Update, respectively.

          Re: update service computer policy

          this is not my question!

microsoft create default policies in every system
          in sbs 2008 there are:

          update service client computer
          update service server computer

both are for computer as u can see
one as the name of the gpo should apply to clients
          and the other to servers

but they are loctaed both on the root of the
domain structure, and not to the ou they should apply to.

          hope i am clear

            Re: update service computer policy

If they are located in the "root" then they will apply to any OU below it.
Your question is still not clear, in fact, I do not see a question, just statements.

Are you wanting to know why there are 2 GPOs?
Are you wanting to know why the GPOs are located where they are?

                Re: update service computer policy

And if you create another OU for whatever reason (Branch Office or to control Terminal Servers) differently from the default OU's, don't you want them to get updates according to the Update Policy at the domain level?

                  sure i do
my q is how the process know if it is a server or workstation
that it need to apply to

as i know the gp only method is by hierarchy

                    Re: update service computer policy

Your workstations (if added by wizard) will be in one OU and your servers in the other
You can move them yourself if you want

                      Re: update service computer policy

And IIRC any member servers added, do end up in the wrong OU and HAVE to moved manually.
                      TIA
