  • Folder Redirection with Roaming Profiles, Roaming Profiles aren't working

So I installed a setup for a client of mine. Everything going great till I want to deploy Roaming Profiles

I setup Folder Redirection to the default SBS 2003 Users Shared Folder directory. Log the user in and out and My Documents, Desktop and Application Data is now on \\server\users\username

Great, now this client is a Fire Department, so about 8 computers for about 20ish users who come on at different times and use different machines to check the email (exchange), check calendar etc. So I figured lets setup Roaming Profiles so any machine they go on they have the same settings/looks and feel.

I refreshed my memory on the subjected, created a Profiles directory and shared it as Profiles with Everyone as Full Control. I go to the users profile in AD and type in \\server\profiles\username

Log the user on and off a few times, restart the machine. Nothing no signs of data going to the Profiles share.

So what exactly am I doing wrong? This is how I read up on it to do, and everyone suggested Roaming Profiles alone isn't the best but with Folder Redirection works much better to speed up Log On and Log Offs.

So what can I do to troubleshoot?

Pictures of what I have done:

    I would try this:

Set the path to be \\server\profiles\%username% and let Windows create the user profile.

      NO!!
UTFW on the Server Manager/Users there is a wizard which does Folder Redirection for you with a minimal amount of configuration. Not that you are wrong, Joeqwerty, but why make it complicated? All that is left now is to add redirection to Desktop and Favourites- performs better than roaming profiles also.

Iím honoured to have been selected for the SMB 150 list for 2013. This is the third time in succession (no logo available for 2011) that I have been honoured with this award.

I based my answer on setting up roaming profiles in a non-SBS environment. It sounds like Steven knows the right way to do it for SBS, so follow his advice.

Even in a non-SBS environment, I recommend doing it by Group Policy, I have always found Roaming Profiles to be slow and give poor performance. Better to set up folder redirection of My Documents, Desktop and Favourites to the server via group policy and get almost the same results. You are better off with those items on the server anyway, where they are probably systematically backed up.
