  • Sharepoint WSS 3.0 migration....

I was following the SBS Migration documentation for migrating my WSS
content db for WSS3.0. However, half way through I realized that the
document still assumes you have WSS 2.0.

So I tried to re-attach my DB to my old server and re-start my WSS
service, unfortunately for whatever reason that doesn't work and I get
permission denied errors for NETWORK SERVICE user.

At any rate, I decided ok since I'm migrating I'll move the MDF and LDF
    over to the new server.

I did so, and attached them via SQL 2005 express.

I then made my WSS site, and deleted the "New" content DB and tried to
add mine in. Unfortunately it gave me an "Unknown error" message while
    trying to do this.

I then tried stsadm -o addcontentdb -url http://mysharepoint
    WSS_CONTENT_RANDOMSTRINGOFLETTERSANDNUMBERS

This gave me a message about being updated and that I'd need to update
my sites before using the content DB.

Something is clearly wrong on this path I'm going. The MDF and LDF
should ALREADY contain a WSS 3.0 content site.

Can anyone give me some guidance how to restore my sharepoint site from
an MDF and LDF since I have no way to get it back online with the old
server (I can't figure out why the permissions suddenly changed?) to run
an stsadm -o export on it?

    *EDIT:
I got the MDF/LDF as a content database for the site, but it says "Number of Sites: 0", so it's not linking up somewhere and I can't load the data in a browser.

reinstall your original SBS 2008 WSS 3 site (the one with the fax integration etc.)
    then follow this article....

Iím honoured to have been selected for the SMB 150 list for 2013. This is the third time in succession (no logo available for 2011) that I have been honoured with this award.

I can't get my original site on my SBS 2003 box to work anymore. When I re-attach the DB and try to access the site I get a 404 and the event log says that NT AUTHORITY permission denied. I'm not sure why detaching the database and re-attaching it (per the instructions in the migration howto) breaks my permissions, but I cannot run an stsadm -o export because I cannot get the original site to work. All I am left with now is the MDF and LDF files.

Have you tried re-running setup from the installation disks?
