  • SBS 2003 find a shared printer BUT cannot use it.

    Hi all !!

I installed a new driver of an hp printer "HP 1010 laser jet" on a client computer named SYDNEY. (usb, port: dot 4), than I shared it as: HP1010.

I can print from the local computer, but When I try to print from another client computer OR from my server I get the message:

"Windowns cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server."

when I print from another computer I have to press on the "find printer"
button because the name of the printer or share name does not appear.

Than when I find it using the search in the active directory, it appears as : hp LaserJet 1010, and when I choose it, I get the same message as above.

What can I do to fix it? already checked: connectivity, clean install, shared it, permitions, printer state (ready to use).

Thank you for the help but still I made sure that the file sharing and printers are enabled by default on my server policy.

In the clients personal firewall it is set on Yes by policy.

      what can i check next?

      thnx.

Ok I disabled the fire wall by removing it from the policy of the server
and also by turning it off at the client cpu manualy.
in eather case the printer dont work and it sends the same message

More over i noticed that to connect a simple printer not based on usb dot 4 port is simple and its working.

But the weird thing is that the server sometimes see it and sometimes dont.
and even when the printer is in my active directory published as it should be the server cant use it. its weird.

          thnx

do you have an antivirus with built in firewall or any antiworm utility on the client computer?
            Good Luck

After searching hp's web site, and after asking our local support, hp laserjet 1010 does'nt support printing from the network.
i hope hp's support are right
                Good Luck

                  Well thnx any way.

but just in case i would like to say they are VERY wrong!!!

1> it was working very well a few weeks ago!!.
2> why should they create new printers with no option for network printings?

any way if ill find an answer ill make sure to post it.

thank you very much for your help and all the searches you done.

So the printer was working a few weeks ago??

Have you changed anything on the Print Server that would affect the printer??

                    Is the printer still shared??

Are the permissions correct on the printer itself??

If you go to start > run and then type \\servername and press enter. Your server shows up and is the printer shown? If you double click on it then what happens? Does it add? Fail?

I had the same problem (except with a HP 4050).

I fixed my problem by recreating the printer using "HP Standard TCP/IP Port", and not the Standard TCP/IP Port.

You might also want to check the HP Beta Drivers for support. They have much more functionality that the "released" versions of their drivers.
