  • SBS2003 Backups Fail VSS

    Hello

A client of ours is having problems with SBS backups failing with the following errors.

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
    Timeout before function completed

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff
    Aborting Backup.

I've trawled the net and found many different fixes, none of which have resolved the issue. Its getting to the point where i need to resolve this but don't know what to do, I've tried everything..... Help

Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

One thing that is odd, this only occurs when the scheduled backup is run, if i manually run the SBS backup, it runs fine without errors

    Thanks

    Adam

        thanks for replying.

i don't think the petri forum link applies to the issue im having. there are no power issues, or exchange issues.

I have already done the DLLs, but i will do them again now and report back in the morning if it is successful or not.

        Thanks

This is a long shot but what account are you using to run the backup when scheduled? And additionally none of the writers are in an error state so VSS is not the issue.

                Re: SBS2003 Backups Fail VSS

the backup is running as DOMAIN\administrator

Just check the vss writers again, the are still the same i.e. no errors and stable, however, when i have previously checked these have been some that were waiting for completion etc

                thanks

                  Re: SBS2003 Backups Fail VSS

just made the administrator a member of the backup operators, will monitor the backup tonight and post results tomorrow

also noticed the admin account only had a pre 2000 logon name in the account tab in AD, not sure if this will make a difference,

                    Re: SBS2003 Backups Fail VSS

The above didn't fix the problem initially.
however, the backups did start to run a couple of days after.

but....... the backups suddenly started failing again.
this was after i upgraded sharepoint from MSDE to SQL200
                    aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........

i have done a couple of things in sql, like changing the recovery model from full to simple. apparently this has resolved the issue for some people, but not me. Any ideas

                    Thanks

The above is taken from your attachment. Are you using the original administrator user of the system for this or is it IND-TRAINING\SBS Backup User? If it is the latter, can you try using the original system administrator (500)

aaaahhhh sorry, that's a log from when i was using sbs backup.
im now using nt backup and i have 3 seperate backups, 1 for system state, 1 for data and one for exchange. the system state and files are failing with the original errors, and the event log error are also the same. the exchange backup is running fine.

any other suggestion would be appreciated.
