  • Failed to open group policy object

    I just completed a new SBS 2003 R2 install this weekend. Everything went well, however, at the end of the install the CFO accidentally unplugged the server.

    It did not appear if any damage was done, however, this morning I have a few 1030 and 1058 errors I want to address. When I try to edit the default domain policy or the domain controller policy, I get the error:

    Group Policy Error
    Failed to open Group Policy Object
    You may not have appropriate rights
    Detail:
    The network path was not found

    Any suggestions?

    I take it the error source is userenv? I've seen this one a few times, first thing I usually try is running dfsutil /purgemupcache from the command line.

    Check this kb article too.

      I already tried that but I would say at this point the more serious problem is that I cannot edit any of the group policies hence the description of my post. Thanks.

        Would the fact I am trying to access the SBS server via RDP have anything to do with this?

        {edit} makes no difference. I was able to open up the group policy editor on another SBS computer using RDP.

          Have you rebooted the server?

            Re: Failed to open group policy object {solved}

            This is a known issue with OEM SBS servers and is addressed by Microsoft in
            KB888943. It took a call to Microsoft support to resolve this.

            http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888943

            Thanks for the assistance.
