  • SBS2000 - Adding TS Server in Application Mode

I need to give 10 remote users access to an internal database. I want to avoid running these RDP sessions on the DC itself.
Can I add a new TS Server running in Application Mode to a SBS2000 domain?.

Does anyone know the Licensing implications??, best way around this Scenario?

    Any info muchly appreciated.

    TS

There no known limitation under SBS 2000 Besdie the 50 users quota limit.
Also, if you will add TS 2003 to the domain, the license server should (and must) reside on Win 2003 server.
You will need also to buy 10 CAL for TS and activate the TS license server.

      Cheers for your reply Yuval.

So do you reckon it'll be a whole lot easier to build a Windows 2000 Server (not 2003), and enable TS Application Mode.

If I did this the "TS license server" will be the existing SBS2000 Domain Controller and all CAL licenses will all be taken care of?..

Pls let me know if Im wildly off the mark here..?
      Thanks again

        yes you can

if you have sbs2000 with 10 cals you can add another windows 2000 server and install terminal server on it in application mode.
you do not need additional cals for the new server only the operating system license.(the windows 2000 server gets the cals from the sbs2000 cals)
if the clients are windows 2000 pro or windows xp pro (not home) then they have their own terminal server cal build in.
if the clients are win9x or linux then you have to buy terminal cals for them.
if the terminal server is windows server 2003 then you have to buy the operating system license and 10 windows 2003 cals and terminal server cals for all the operating systems except windows xp pro that purchased perior to april 2003.
also the terminal server licensing service shoud be reside on the windows 2003 server.

        good luck

1 more question O wise one..

If I build a new 2003 server and leave it in WORKGROUP (ie,dont join it to any domain), can I use Terminal Services Application Mode? without installing TS Licensing?. This is not trying to be difficult just searching options for my client.

              Thanks
              Tom

                I dont think so

to use windows 2003 as application mode you must install terminal server
                Good Luck
